The state of New Mexico is suing Kroger, Walgreens and Walmart for failing to police the distribution of prescription opioids to its citizens. New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas said the three retailers dispensed more than 550 million opioid pills between 2006 and 2019, the equivalent of more than 263 for every person living in the state. The retailers said that their pharmacists exercised their “professional judgment” in distributing the meds and did not “knowingly” fill any prescriptions that were illegitimate.
