SAN DIEGO – A sailor was found dead Sunday aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson at Naval Air Station North Island, U.S. Navy officials said in a statement.
The sailor, whose name was not released, was found unresponsive on the ship while it was pier side, said Lt. Cmdr. Christina Gibson, a public affairs officer for the carrier. Gibson said that the Navy Region Southwest Federal Fire Department responded and pronounced the sailor dead.
Officials do not believe the death is suspicious and say there are no apparent signs of suicide or foul play. The Navy is investigating the death.
The sailor’s identity is expected to be released 24 hours after the sailor’s family is notified.
No further details were immediately available.
